Way of the Orient Martial Arts Academy

Way of the Orient Martial Arts Academy has been serving Ventura & Santa Barbara Counties for over 25 years. We specialize in teaching Taekwondo & Hapkido. All of our instructors are certified by the United States Hapkido Federation and the World Taekwondo Federation.

What is Hapkido?

Hapkido is a martial art of considerable depth with a history dating back 13 centuries to the sovereignty of King Chin-Hueng. The art was practiced by the elite bodyguards of each king during the Silla Dynasty in Korea.

Hapkido means, literally translated:

  • Hap: Coordination
  • Ki: Power
  • Do: Art/Way

Non-resistance and knowledge of body mechanics and movement are flowing characteristics of Hapkido.

Hapkido differs from its traditional Karate cousins by metering response to the measure of threat. It is a modern system of self-defense for today's conflicts.

Hapkido incorporates the kicking and hand strikes of Taekwondo as well as joint locking, throwing, and the use of pressure points.

Hapkido develops the coordination of mind and body through 2 basic areas:

  1. Harmony/Non-resistence - meet force with minimum force to deflect, not clash with adversary power.
  2. Circular motion of defense and attack using lines of uninterrupted motion.
  3. Saturation: Whole body involvement flowing over, around, and through an adversary.

What is Taekwondo?

Taekwondo is a martial art that independently developed in Korea over a period of 20 centuries. It has developed into a modern international sport.

Taekwondo means literally, the Way/Art of hand and foot. A spectacular and devastating style of kicking and punching, sweeping, jabbing, and blocking.

Taekwondo practitioners base and evaluate development by physical, moral, and mental standards worldwide.

The Taekwondo family numbers over 20 million, and growing.

The World Taekwondo Center (KUKKIWON) was built in 1972 and the World Taekwondo Federation was inaugurated in 1973.

Truly a world sport, Taekwondo has been included the Asian Games, the Pan American Games, the South American Games, and the All Africa Games.

Taekwondo is recognized by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) as an official sport of the Olympic Games.
